As the seasons change, so does how you care for your skin. However, there are also consistent skincare tactics you’ll need to follow all year long. And with so many steps, options, and ingredients to choose from, it can be difficult to know where to start.
At BeachGlo Aesthetics, we are more than a facial spa in Nags Head. We are a skin clinic that provides medical-grade treatments and products, enhancing your skincare so you can enjoy a smooth, glowing complexion no matter the season.
Here, we’ll explain the basics of caring for your skin, helping you craft the perfect skincare routine all year long.
All About Education
Our team at BeachGlo focuses on giving our patients the knowledge, tools, and resources they need to make the best decisions for their health and wellness. Here, we’ll explain the basics of how skin works and how our treatments and products can help you improve it.
The Basics of Your Skin
Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and it has 3 layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous tissue.
The epidermis is the uppermost layer of your skin, and it mostly serves to protect you from environmental toxins, pollutants, and other harmful substances. It also prevents bacteria and germs from entering your bloodstream and causing infections, while also shielding your cells against UV radiation.
The dermis is the largest layer, making up 90% of the skin’s thickness. This is where collagen and elastin are made. These two proteins are responsible for building healthy, flexible skin with a strong cellular structure.
At our skin clinic and facial spa in Nags Head, we offer multiple treatments to stimulate your body’s natural production of these two proteins. The dermis is responsible for much more, including hair growth, oil production, temperature regulation, sweat production, and blood supply to the epidermis.
The subcutaneous tissue, also known as the hypodermis, is where excess fat lives in between connective tissue. This tissue and the fat cells work to cushion your bones and your muscles, support nerves and blood vessels, and help regulate your body temperature.
Most skincare products only affect the epidermis, which can help create the appearance of better skin, but they don’t affect collagen and elastin production. For the healthiest, strongest skin, you want plenty of collagen and elastin—especially since your body naturally produces less of these proteins as you age.
That is why, at our skin clinic and facial spa in Nags Head, we like to pair at-home skincare products with in-office skin treatments to enhance your skin from the inside out.
Building Healthy Skin With In-House Treatments
These are some of our most popular in-house treatments and how they can enhance your skin’s health.
Exion RF Microneedling
This exceptional treatment combines radiofrequency and microneedling to double and even triple the benefits for your skin. What this treatment does is that it creates micro-channels within your face as deep as 4mm. This already stimulates your body’s collagen and elastin production, but when combined with heat produced by radiofrequency, it doubles the depth at which the treatment affects your skin, creating improvements as deep as 8mm on your body and 4mm on your face.
HydraFacial
As a skin clinic and facial spa in Nags Head, we love the HydraFacial since it combines the comfort of a facial with the efficacy of a medical-grade skin treatment. The HydraFacial uses vortex vacuum technology to deliver the highest form of exfoliation using the gentlest methods. Then, it uses water exfoliation to cleanse the skin, going deeper into the pores to thoroughly cleanse and hydrate the skin. We then apply condition-specific boosters and use LED light therapy to fight off acne. Then we finish treatment by applying a mineral-based sunscreen to protect your skin from UV damage.
VI Peel
The VI peel uses a mixture of unique chemical compounds to create a reaction within your skin, causing it to shed the upper layer of your epidermis. This removes the dead and damaged skin cells and reveals fresh, smooth, and healthy skin. This process also stimulates your body’s natural healing process, which causes an increase in the production of collagen and elastin. That will help you tackle wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and more. VI peel offers five different types of peel that address different concerns such as aging, acne, and pigmentation. During your consultation, we will determine which one suits your needs the best.
Exion Body
Exion is a versatile piece of equipment that can deliver 4 different treatments with 1 device. For this blog, we’ll focus on Exion RF for the face and Exion RF for the body. While these two handpieces use the same science to improve your skin, Exion RF for face uses lower heat temperatures so you can increase collagen and elastin production without targeting the fat within your face. We want your face to have fat since that is what will help you stay looking younger for longer. However, the heat that is applied to your skin will stimulate collagen and elastin production, which helps tighten skin and reverse wrinkles.
Meanwhile, the Exion RF body applicator is larger, and applies more heat than the treatment area. This not only increases collagen and elastin for smoother, wrinkle-free skin, but also targets pockets of stubborn fat. This helps you create a slimmer figure and younger-looking skin.
CoolPeel
The CoolPeel is a laser treatment at our skin clinic and facial spa in Nags Head that gently removes the dead and damaged skin cells from your epidermis and the uppermost layers of your dermis. What makes the CoolPeel such a revolutionary piece of technology is that it uses CO2 to accomplish this rather than thermal energy, making treatment more accurate and more comfortable than other laser treatments available today. This technology also allows us to customize the depth of your treatment, so we can address superficial concerns or move deeper into the skin to address issues like scarring.
Facials
Even though facials do not penetrate as deep as other skin treatments, they are still effective services that can work to improve the health of your skin. Facials clean your pores of germs and impurities, and provide the nutrients your skin needs to support collagen and elastin production. We typically recommend getting a facial at least 4 times a year to address different pollutants that come with each season. We also recommend getting a facial before starting any treatment series with laser or microneedling to help you improve your results.
Create Your Personalized Skincare Routine
Creating healthy skin goes beyond in-house treatments—it also includes personalized at-home routines that use medical-grade skincare products. Our facial spa in Nags Head carries Epicuren Discovery and AnteAge products because of how effective they are while still using pure ingredients. We also carry EltaMD sunscreen that we recommend using year-round to protect yourself from cancer, pre-mature aging, and sunspots. Our team are big believers in using the products we recommend, so you can hear from us directly about how the product feels on your skin, how it helps your skin health, and more.
However, having proper skincare is about more than just having the right brands—it’s also knowing which specific products are right for your skin needs, and the order you should use them in. Here are the basic steps you should have for your skincare routine:
Morning Routine
These are the steps you follow for your morning skincare routine:
1) Cleanse
We offer many different types of cleansers as BeachGlo to address a wide variety of skin types. When you come into our facial spa in Nags Head, your provider will help you determine your specific skin type, and which cleansers might work best for you.
2) Moisturize
Moisturizer is meant to maintain your skin’s hydration. Those with dryer skin should use thicker creams to help support moisture, but those with oily or combination skin should use moisturizers to avoid that “greasy” feeling of over-moisturized skin. By moisturizing regularly, you can maintain your skin’s natural barrier to prevent blemishes and other skin issues.
3) Protect
Sunscreen is considered the most important step in any skincare routine. We recommend using a mineral based sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF, and then reapplying every 2 to 3 hours. SPF 30 is what we consider to be the ideal level, as anything lower than 30 is still leaving your skin vulnerable to direct UV radiation, whereas higher SPF levels don’t provide substantially greater protection.
Evening Routine
These steps for your evening skincare will help you create healthier skin while you sleep:
1) Cleanse
It’s important to make sure your skin is thoroughly clean before applying the other products in your routine. We recommend you to cleanse your skin using lukewarm water, gently massaging the cleanser into your pores before rinsing. Then, pat dry with a clean towel—do not rub the towel on your skin, as this could cause irritation.
2) Treat
Applying serums that address your individual skin needs are important to include in your evening routine. We typically recommend vitamin C, antioxidant, or retinol as products that can help you correct common skin concerns. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends you avoid popping pimples, whiteheads, and other blemishes yourself, as this can cause even more damage to your skin. You can find the right serums for your specific skin concerns when you visit our skin clinic and facial spa in Nags Head.
4) Moisturize
A moisturizer that is specific for your needs is important. Your skin may need different products depending on the season and as we age and our skin changes. Moisturizing products help improve and maintain your skin’s moisture. Nutrient-rich creams help repair cells and seal in all the other products to ensure they penetrate deep into your skin. Sometimes we recommend a thicker product to moisturize at night. A night cream can contain different ingredients, so your BeachGlo provider can help you determine which product would work best for you.
